Embroidery
At Darwaza, embroidery is more than an embellishment; it is a way of telling a story. Every flower, every petal, every thread, and every little detail is thoughtfully considered to ensure that the person experiencing the piece feels exactly what we imagined when we first set out to create it.
Our approach to embroidery is guided by the story each garment wishes to tell. Sometimes, we work with artisan women from the craft clusters of Kutch, Gujarat, whose work carries the beauty of the handmade its rawness, its organic irregularities, and the quiet charm of something created entirely by hand. The subtle variations in their stitches lend each piece a sense of individuality, preserving the warmth and character that only human hands can bring.
At other times, we turn to the highly skilled karigars of Kolkata, whose remarkable precision allows us to achieve intricate zardozi and fine threadwork with exceptional clarity. Their mastery lies in the smallest details, creating embroidery so crisp and refined that it can almost be mistaken for machine work, while retaining the skill and patience of the hands behind it.
We also seek out women who continue to practise and preserve the tradition of cross-stitch embroidery, a craft that is becoming increasingly rare. Working alongside them, we explore ways to reinterpret this time-honoured technique through our own design language, giving traditional motifs a fresh perspective while honouring the hands and heritage that keep the craft alive.
No two embroideries at Darwaza follow the same direction. Each technique is chosen for what it can express — whether it is the delicate precision of a fine line, the expressive character of a hand-stitched flower, or the nostalgia held within a traditional motif. We let the story guide the stitch, allowing every embroidery to find its own language.
Because, to us, the beauty of embroidery lies not simply in how it looks, but in what it makes you feel.
